Hi all. Obviously everyones experience is different but 3 weeks ago I had the dreaded prostate biopsy. I had known about it for six months prior to having the procedure so had time to do internet research and prepare myself mentally. Sort of! The appointment day rolled around but was cancelled (due to weather) so I had to wait another week before heading into the hospital. Now, I am the biggest man baby' when it comes to pain/needles etc. No tears, but a whole lot of fear and nerves. The first step was a brief consultation with a medical specialist. He informed me of what was going to happen during the procedure. When he had finished I bombarded him with a bucket load of questions that I had prepared.....how many samples will be taken (10) / what if I urinate during (no problem) / will it be painful (uncomfortable) / how long will it last (about 10 minutes) ........ And here is how it really went..... The nurse was amazing. Asked me to undress (bottom half only) and lie on the bed. She held a sheet in front of me while I obeyed. She spoke to me quietly about what the doctor would do and what I might' experience. Her manner was calm, sensitive and informative. Brilliant. It helped. When the doctor came in (about 10 minutes later) I wasted no time in asking him to give me something to numb the area. Apparently not all Doctors do this but ASK! It is your right. I lay facing away from the doctor with my knees bent up blah blah. He did the finger test first before proceeding.<br />The next step was to insert a small tube (ultra sound) to guide the needle. This did not bother me. No pain and not really even uncomfortable. Next step was to inject the pain relief. I did not feel the needle going in at all unlike some of you. Praise be. And then almost immediately he proceeded to take the samples. In my head even though I knew the needle was guided by ultra sound I thought it was going to be hand held like a blood test. Thankfully no. It was a trigger' and the noise of the trigger startled me more than any form of pain or discomfort. I zoned out deep breathing and counted each sample from 10 1 as they happened. Again, I did not feel any pain AT ALL! The process of taking the samples would have been no longer than one minute. Okay two max! And no I did not urinate on the bed during (which can happen). Phew. There was some blood on the bed from my anus. Go figure. Since the biopsy, I have signs of blood in the urine especially at the start of urination. These are lessening. I am drinking water constantly to help flush out anything that shouldn't be there. Like most of you, my semen was a rich, deep red colour but has now changed to a dark brown colour and getting lighter. It isn't great eh but from all the research this seems to be the norm. I have not had any bleeding from the anus. I have not experienced any pain. When the relief started to wear off immediately after the biopsy, it was just of feeling of something has happened up there' but this had gone by the next morning. I didn't do any physical exercise and walked slowly. My results were negative for cancer but I do have high grade PIN (in brief, a pre-cancerous condition) which will be monitored carefully. As I said at the start, everyones experience is different but for me the "thought' was much worse than the reality. All the best to all of you and thank you for sharing. It has really helped.
